“Media literacy is not a new subject to teach; but a new way to teach all subjects.”
- Elizabeth Thoman / CML Founder
More and more teachers and schools are understanding the importance of media literacy education not as a new subject to teach but as a new approach to subjects such as language arts, social studies, health, the arts, even science and math. Incorporating media literacy activities into traditional subjects not only recognizes the amazing body of knowledge students bring with them into classroom each day but it also engages students in a way that makes learning relevant to kids’ lives, now and in the future.
Teachers can find dozens of ideas for integrating media literacy throughout the curriculum in the informative booklet, “12 Principles for Incorporating Media Literacy into Any Curriculum” written and distributed by Project Look Sharp at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY. The principles are based on the concept of weaving media literacy into the curriculum whenever and wherever possible throughout the school year. It is an excellent resource for teachers of all grade levels and subject areas.
