• Policies for Re-Use or duplication of the CML MediaLit Kit™ and its components.
The following policies provide guidelines for when copyright permission is needed to re-use or duplicate the CML MediaLit Kit and any of its components.
2. Classes and courses:
If you would like to re-use or reproduce material from the CML MediaLit Kit™ (in whole or in part) for further distribution to others (whether electronic or print), you must receive permission from the Copyright Clearance Center. Such permission is available for one semester at a time.
No permission is needed to download and use the PowerPoint slides as long as content is not altered and the PowerPoint slides are used in an educational context to explain or explore concepts in the CML MediaLit Kit™ framework.
3. Schools and school districts, universities publishers and producers, training companies and professional educational service providers:
You must receive permission from the Copyright Clearance Center if, beyond an initial download, you wish to reproduce and distribute CML MediaLit Kit™ documents as supplemental resources for study or training. Some examples:
- Post the MediaLit Kit™ documents (or portions thereof) to an electronic bulletin board or online reference site

NOTE: For official adoption or universal application of the CML MediaLit Kit™ framework as foundation for creating a curriculum, a repeating course syllabus or any other published work, please review CML’s licensing program below.
4. Licensing the CML MediaLit Kit™ documents.
[Licensing is a process for gaining permission to use copyrighted materials which both protects the copyright and also recovers the significant cost of developing the materials and making them available for public use. It also assures that the quality and credibility of a program, in whole or in part, is maintained through consistent use.]
As an established and credible framework for building out a media literacy program, the CML MediaLit Kit™ is a ready-to-use package available for adoption and licensing.
If you wish to use the major concepts or principles of the CML MediaLit Kit™ as a foundation or framework for developing further applications -- for example, creating an on-line course to be taught regularly or to develop a published curriculum or “train the trainer” type program that involves distribution to others, you’ll need to explore licensing the MediaLit Kit™ framework from the CML.
An approved license includes permission for print or electronic duplication and distribution of any of the theories and tools created under the MediaLit Kit™ umbrella. You may further use it as the foundation for the development of new articulations or to create new tools although core components such as the Five Key Questions or the Five Core Concepts may not be changed or altered in their language, order or style.
Please note: The Copyright Clearance Center does NOT handle licensing requests. To arrange for licensing of the CML MediaLit Kit™ as a conceptual framework for media literacy implementation programs, contact : Tessa Jolls.
