Guidelines For Re-Using Content on the CML website:
Since its founding in 1989, the Center for Media Literacy has been committed to making media literacy information and resources available for wide low-cost distribution while at the same time, receiving fair compensation for expenses incurred and respecting the creative talent and insights of those who have contributed to the development of thought in our field over time. It is important to note the following:
- All materials on this site are copyrighted by CML or by the author, who has given us permission to post the work on the CML website.
- We have also been granted the right from most, but not all, copyright owners to authorize permission for further distribution for educational use only.
- With growing demand to re-use these resources for classes, college coursepacks, teacher training workshops, graduate seminars, etc., we have established a relationship with the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) to administer all requests for permission to reprint or re-use, whether in print or in an electronic format. A small fee may be collected by the CCC to cover costs of administering this service. We believe that this arrangement will ensure that your requests are handled in a timely way without delay.
- The Copyright Clearance Center only administers the permission process. You may download one or more document(s) at any time from the CML website but to legally reprint or re-use them for further distribution, you need to obtain written permission.

What content on the CML website is available to duplicate or re-use?
1. Articles in the CML Reading Room
The Reading Room on the Center’s website contains hundreds of original source documents, selected articles from Media&Values magazine, speeches, articles from various publications, reports and personal reflections –
- tracing steps in the development of media literacy in the US.
- explaining the evolution of media literacy pedagogy and core concepts,
- exploring issues and themes in media literacy education
- providing teaching tips, model lesson plans and case studies
Over 400 articles from the Reading Room have been cleared for re-use. It is a rich resource for readings in high school and undergraduate classes, graduate seminars, in-service workshops and professional development programs. Through the Copyright Clearance Center you can receive the appropriate legal permissions to make photocopies, upload to electronic coursepacks, incorporate into research reports, etc.
2. CML MediaLit Kit™ / A Framework for Learning and Teaching in a Media Age.™
The CML MediaLit Kit™ is a collection of resources designed to articulate the core concepts of media literacy education and how to teach it across the K-12 curriculum. It consists of three major downloadable documents for which you can obtain permission to re-use or duplicate (in whole or in part) through the Copyright Clearance Center:
- Literacy for the 21st Century: An Overview and Orientation to Media Literacy Education (45 pages)
Introduction to the Five Key Questions, the Five Core Concepts and other basic principles for teaching with a media literacy lens. The original 2002 edition of this document is also available in Spanish: Conjunto de Herramientas para Alfabetismo en Medios.
- Five Key Questions that Can Change the World (80 pages)
A collection of 25 starter lesson plans, five for each of the Five Key Questions. Spanish version also available: Cinco Preguntas Claves que Pueden Cambiar el Mundo
- Project SmartArt: A Road to Follow
Overview and process reflection on lessons learned in implementing a 3-year demonstration project in elementary media literacy and the arts. Funding by the U.S. Department of Education.
Additional components include related handouts, PowerPoint slides, video clips and other resources useful for graduate seminars, professional training programs or in-service workshops.
The CML MediaLit Kit™ is the first comprehensive framework that provides a firm foundation for developing inquiry-based media literacy programs and curriculum – from kindergarten through college. MediaLit Kit™ materials are acclaimed for their ‘plain language’ articulations of the theory and practice of media literacy thus making them extremely useful for both pre-service and in-service professional development programs, graduate seminars in colleges of education, or as the cornerstone “textbook” for online courses in media literacy theory and practice.
