The CML MediaLit Kit™ captures the essence of media literacy in the 21st century and is embedded in all CML's current work in leadership, training and educational resources. When developing a media literacy program, it is essential to have a consistent framework and tools to start with.
It is CML's mission to "translate media literacy research and theory into practical information, training and educational tools..." For over 25 years the Center for Media Literacy has built a reputation for clear and concise interpretation and articulation of the theory and issues in media literacy.
In 1994, CML founder Elizabeth Thoman made copyright free her foundational article "Skills and Strategies for Media Education." Since then, it has been widely reprinted and thousands of copies have been reproduced and used for workshops and training. It helped to establish a common language and understanding for media literacy nationally.
The time has come for a new articulation that reflects evolutionary developments in the field including the impact of new technology on learning – and on life. The CML MediaLit Kit™ framework rests on an evolving history of media literacy pedagogy over the past 30 years.
These tools can be used individually or together, for training workshops, in-services, library reference and parent/community education as well as in the classroom. In addition, the MediaLit Kit™ is available for licensing to publishers, training organizations and service agencies needing an established, credible framework for incorporating inquiry-based media literacy in their work.
The CML MediaLit Kit™ handout and poster content designs were created by Mark W. Moody, BFA, MA Ed (Seattle, WA). The creative identity of the MediaLit Kit™ is by Dave Matli of Atomix Creative (Los Angeles).
