Media&Values
Behind the Scenes: People with Passion

Media&Values was published primarily with the creativity, insight and uncounted hours of overtime by dozens of people who believed deeply in the mission of the magazine: not to have all the answers but how to ask the right questions.

For over ten years Editor Rosalind Silver teamed with Founder and chief fundraiser Elizabeth Thoman to provide the core vision, journalistic skill and publishing expertise needed to create and deliver a quality publication four times a year (well, almost!) Each thematic issue gestated on her desk for months and in the end, incorporated a rich collection of original articles and interviews combined with reprints, book excerpts, cartoons, illustrations, sidebars, teaching tips, headlines, quotes and a one-page resource-ography. Silver was acclaimed for her ability to rewrite an article filled with academic jargon and translate it into scintillating prose for the everyday reader!

  • Authors and writers published by M&V over the years include some of the leading voices in media studies and the media industry: Norman Lear, Ben Bagdikian, Kathleen Jamieson, Jeff Greenfield, Daniel Schorr, Mark Crispin Miller, Sam Keen, George Gerbner, Jean Kilbourne, Sut Jhally, Stewart Hoover, Josh Meyrowitz, Jane Brown, Marilyn Kern-Foxworth, Dan Hallin, Elayne Rapping, Jay Rosen, Carmen Finestra, Gary David Goldberg and many others.

  • Talented managing editors and graphic designers insured the attractive readability of the magazine with its arresting front covers, creative illustrations and meticulously clean page layout: France White, Damien Ramirez, Ginny Laughlin, Phyllis Martinez, Kerry Skorlich Gerot, Jay Dover. James Robie designed the enduring masthead and Stuart Ritter provided invaluable assistance in computerizing Media&Values systems and managing the production process from Issues #36 to #63.

  • From Issue # 33 through 51, a variety of regular and guest columnists contributed reflection and action ideas on each issue's theme from their own special perspective:
    Minorities: Carlos Cortes
Women: Maria Riley, OP, Sally Steenland
    Pastoring: Leonard Freeman, Peter Paulsen
    Children: Judith Myers-Walls
Family: Margaret Foth, Helen H. Graham
    Advocacy: Donna Demac
Global Scene: Robert A White, SJ, Keval Joseph Kumar
    Youth: Bill Wolfe

  • Dozens of college Interns and work-study students from Cal State/Northridge, USC and UCLA, many of whom (including Jeff Killingsworth, Stacey Suyat, David Ruth, Victoria Lins and Brooke Primero) have gone on to careers in the professional media industry, did research, typed copy, tracked permissions, wrote sidebars, proofread pages and brainstormed headlines. Numerous students from Otis Art Institute and Art Center College of Design contributed illustrations, photographs and artwork.

  • Business managers and administrative assistants kept track of subscriptions and renewals, took phone messages, answered mail and juggled bills! Beth White, Barbie White, Maria Santillan and Karen Oblom were among many who contributed much.

Although all grasped more than a glimmer of the technological revolution going on around them in the 1980s, none quite envisioned the Internet as it has evolved today. But thanks to the Internet and through this website, their creativity and hard work has evolved from the printed page to cyberspace, providing continuing guidance to help new generations ask the right questions about everything they watch, read or hear.
